The Mercado de las Artes Performativas del Atlántico Sur (MAPAS) has already selected the shows that will participate in this first edition, both for business rounds and for live artistic shows. After a curatorial process that had to decide between more than 500 high-quality projects in dance, theater and street theater, circus and music, more than two hundred proposals from all disciplines, from countries as distant and different as Argentina, Burkina Faso, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ecuador or South Africa. The Canary Islands will also have an important presence in this international meeting, since there is a wide representation of projects from the Archipelago, both in music and performing arts. The definitive list can be consulted at http://mapasmercadocultural.com/archivos/seleccionados-MAPAS2017.pdf
For the insular director of Culture of the Cabildo de Tenerife, José Luis Rivero, “the talent of the creators of the Islands is an indisputable fact, and now MAPAS opens new perspectives for the commercialization and distribution of the product of that talent, contributing to companies and to artists a space where they can show their creations to visitors from international markets.
He also highlighted the evidence that has revealed the high participation of Latin American and African productions: «We have shown that the Canary Islands, Tenerife in particular, can be consolidated as a tricontinental bridge for creation, as a point where supply and demand converge of productions with characteristics very different from those of other cultural markets ”.
Finally, he congratulated himself that "during the celebration of MAPAS, a leisure option is also offered to the local population and tourists, while productions that, otherwise, would probably have been difficult to access, are released."
Those selected, however, will have until April 17 to confirm their presence in Tenerife, and to polish the materials that they will use for the negotiation with the programmers who come to the market. In the event that the commitments of any of those selected prevent them from attending the appointment with MAPAS, there is a list of substitutes to fill these places. Subsequently, the final program, spaces and times for the artistic exhibitions (open to the public) will be drawn up and the scheduling software for the business roundtables will be put into operation.
All the participants in MAPAS will have the opportunity to meet in the business roundtables with those in charge of programming theaters and halls such as Zitarrosa, in Montevideo; the Palermo Groove, in Buenos Aires; the Tobón Theater, in Medellín; or meetings of international relevance such as the Pittsburgh festivals, in the USA; Seoul Music Week in Korea; the Global Fest Live Sounds, held in New York; the Four Winds of Bermagui, in Australia; or the Fira de Tárrega. Since registration for buyers will be open until April 28, the presence of these top international developers will be increased.
MAPAS is a new market that will be held in Tenerife between July 12 and 16. It is the first professional market for the meeting of all the live performing arts (music, theater, dance, circus and street arts) created in the South Atlantic (Latin America, Africa and southern Europe) with program managers (of theaters, cultural spaces, festivals and other events) from all over the world.
The Cabildo de Tenerife, Circulart and unaHoramenos Producciones organize this forum, with the collaboration of the Auditorio de Tenerife, TEA, Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and the Government of the Canary Islands.
