The deadline for registering artistic projects is 24 March and the list of selected participants will be released on 9 May
The fifth edition of MAPAS, the South Atlantic Performing Arts Market, is now accepting applications from artists, companies and agencies from Latin America, Africa and southern Europe and programming managers from around the world to participate in the 2022 edition, which will be held from 4 to 9 July in Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Programmers from the five continents are also invited to register to attend MAPAS 2022. The closing date for applications to participate in the fifth edition of the market is 7 June.
In this fifth edition, MAPAS aims to cement its reputation as a regional event and to play its part in the strategies adopted by the public institutions to reactivate the performing arts sector. The activities at the market will be decentralised to ensure that the showcase performances are evenly distributed across the islands. They will continue to be divided by specialisation and there will be separate spaces for music and the performing arts. Gran Canaria will be the focal point for music from the three continents covered by the market, featuring nine concerts each day and a networking event for the music industry on 6 July. Performing arts professionals from the South Atlantic will gather in Tenerife, where the networking event will be held on 8 July. This approach sees last year’s schedule reversed to offer the Canarian public a varied selection of showcase performances as part of the market.
With the aim of driving a business culture in the performing arts in the Canary Islands, MAPAS offers artists and programmers a market space where they can gather and do business. The market also offers effective management tools to enable participants to develop and consolidate their work and create synergies with others in the sector. The organisers of MAPAS – the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, unahoramenos and Circulart, in partnership with other institutions and organisations – are concentrating their efforts on consolidating MAPAS as a benchmark international event.
Besides the strategies and policies adopted by the public institutions organising the market, MAPAS aims to leverage its venues for publicity and networking to provide opportunities to boost the circulation of South Atlantic performing arts and to highlight the need to build strategic alliances between artists, distributors and programmers from all over the world. Registration and scheduling will take place via the virtual platform www.mapasmercadocultural.com.
Creators and agencies
Creators and management, booking and distribution agencies working in the performing arts – music, theatre, dance, street arts and circus – may submit applications until 24 March 2022. The results of the selection process, which will be decided by a committee of internationally renowned cultural experts, will be published on 9 May 2022. The selected applicants, 25% of whom will be from the Canary Islands, will be able to participate in the networking event and showcase performances.
The application process for artists and companies is open to individuals, companies, groups and professional collectives who work in the aforementioned disciplines in Latin America, Africa and southern Europe (Spain and Portugal), as well as to foreigners residing in these locations. Among other requirements, artists must demonstrate at least one year of experience and five live performances and one album (for musicians) or five live shows (for performers), while agencies must demonstrate at least three years’ experience in their sector and register at least two artistic groups or shows.
Programmers and cultural managers
Programmers, artistic directors, curators, festival programmers, cultural managers from public or private institutions and entrepreneurs in the performing arts sector are invited to register to participate in the networking events to be held in Gran Canaria and Tenerife on 6 and 8 July 2022 for the music and performing arts industries respectively. Participants will be able to discover innovative artistic performances from three different continents during the event, boosting the performing arts industry in a collaborative, interactive atmosphere. Registration is free and will be open until 7 June 2022.
MAPAS has become the first professional market for the performing arts and live music sectors in the South Atlantic, offering a space for engagement and discussion, where artists can share, learn about, discover and promote their work as a collective. In the 2022 edition, the activities aimed at the music industry will take place from 4 to 6 July at venues around Gran Canaria. Meanwhile, prestigious venues in Tenerife will host an extensive artistic and professional programme for the performing arts industry from 7 to 9 July.
The networking events were supplemented by music and performing arts showcases open to the public, which allowed cultural managers and programmers to discover a selection of artists live. Around 6,500 people attended the showcase performances despite the pandemic and public health measures were observed at all times.
Become the first professional trading market for performing arts and live music in the South Atlantic, MAPAS offers a space for collaboration and exchange in which to share, meet, learn and disseminate from a common perspective. The 2022 edition will schedule activities related to the music on July 4, 5 and 6 at different locations in Gran Canaria. Likewise, scenic spaces of reference of Tenerife will host, from July 7 to 9, a complete artistic and professional program of the stage industry.
