Artists and Agencies Open Call 2020

FOR ARTISTS AND BOOKING, MANAGEMENT AND DISTRIBUTION AGENCIES 2020

 

The Cabildo de Tenerife, Unahoramenos Producciones and Circulart invite artists and creators of live performing arts – music, theatre, dance, street arts and circus – from Latin America, Africa and southern Europe (Spain and Portugal) to participate in mapas – the performing arts market of the South Atlantic, which will be held from 9th to 11th July 2020 in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands – Spain.

The purpose of this open call is to invite all artists, creators, and booking and distribution agencies to present their artistic projects and enter the selection process to allow them to participate in the networking event and artistic performances at mapas 2020. This will provide participants with an opportunity to make connections and boost the circulation of their cultural products and services between the countries in the South Atlantic, Latin America, Africa and Southern Europe and global markets.

Call opens: 14th January 2019

Call closes: 13th March 2020 at 22:00 (Canary Islands time)

Results published: 8th April 2020

PARTICIPANTS

Participants may be individuals, companies, groups and professional collectives performing in the disciplines of music, theatre, dance, circus, and street arts.

SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL

The entire application process will take place via the virtual platform

ARTISTS must:

  1. Demonstrate at least one (1) year of experience via images, audiovisual and press material, prizes, awards, etc.
  2. Accept the terms and conditions of this call, as well as the agreement for your data to be processed by the event organisers.

3.Complete and send your application before the deadline stipulated. Incomplete applications, applications which fail to accept the terms and conditions or applications sent after the deadline will not be taken into consideration.

 

  • Attach the compulsory requirements for each of the disciplines applied for, as listed below:

 

Music:

    • Participants may be musicians and/or professional music groups working in contemporary music.
    • Demonstrate five (5) live performances via programme handouts, press clippings, printed programmes, photos or videos.
    • Include a biography containing: origin, genre and history of the group.
    • Possess at least one album (EP, CD or digital recording). The title, year of production, sleeve and record label must be specified.
    • Include a document containing general production information, tech rider, song credits, producers, management, etc.
    • Reference audiovisual material on any of the following digital platforms: Spotify, Deezer, SoundCloud, iTunes, DailyMotion, Youtube and/or Vimeo, among others, in the relevant format.

Performing arts:

    • Participants may be artists and/or professional groups and companies working in the performing arts, whose work is linked to:      
      • Theatre
      • Dance
      • Circus
      • Street arts
  • Demonstrate ten (10) live performances via programme handouts, press clippings, printed programmes, photos or videos.
  • Include a biography containing: origin, genre and history of the company.
  • Include information about the proposed show, specifying the title and the premiere year and location (programme or poster in PDF format).
  • Include a document containing general information about the show, genre, playwright credits, choreography, number of members in company, etc.
  • Include audiovisual material on any of the following digital platforms:

Youtube, DailyMotion and/or Vimeo.

AGENCIES must:

  1. Demonstrate at least three (3) years of experience via a PDF file containing information about the company’s history, a list of the artists it represents, achievements, awards and other activities or topics relating to its management.
  2. Submit at least two (2) artistic groups or shows which meet the requirements for the open call for artists.
  3. Accept the terms and conditions of this call, as well as the agreement for your data to be processed by the event organisers.
  4. Complete and send your application before the deadline stipulated. Incomplete applications, applications which fail to accept the terms and conditions or applications sent after the deadline will not be taken into consideration.
  5. Attach the compulsory requirements for each of the artists submitted in accordance with their discipline (music or performing arts).

ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES

mapas will schedule promotional shows lasting 30 minutes for music and 60 minutes maximum for performing arts. The shows will be aimed at the professionals participating in the market and at the general public.

If you are interested in participating in these shows, please bear in mind that the organisers will NOT pay fees or cover travel, set design or any other costs. The organisers of the market will provide the selected artists with a stage and the technical equipment required for their show.

Please note: Applicants for the artistic performances will be selected on the basis of the audiovisual material supplied by the artist, group or company. If the organisers do not receive this material, the applicant will be excluded from the selection process.

EVALUATION AND SELECTION

mapas will appoint a jury comprising international experts with the necessary skills and experience in each of the different areas to evaluate the proposals and make the relevant decisions.

The evaluation criteria will be as follows:

  • Quality: Based on their knowledge of the sector, the jury will judge the proposals submitted.
  • Experience: This criterion will be evaluated on the basis of the supporting materials submitted, as well as the applicant’s biography, reviews, prizes and awards.
  • Potential: Drawing on their experience, the jury will decide whether the proposal submitted has the potential to enter the international market.

Selection process

  • The jury will select the best proposals from the call by majority vote.
  • Any proposals which fail to meet one or more of the compulsory requirements will be excluded from the process.
  • The results will be issued in a memorandum signed by the jury, which will list the names of the proposals selected.
  • The list of selected applicants will be published on 8th April 2020 at www.mapasmercadocultural.com.
  • No appeals against the jury’s decision will be accepted.
  • Submission of a proposal to this call will be understood as express authorisation from the selected participant to publish and exhibit their products for strictly promotional purposes in the media considered appropriate by the organisers of mapas. Participants may not request payment for these activities.

RIGHTS AND OBLIGATIONS OF SELECTED APPLICANTS

Participants in the open call undertake to:

  • Pay any transport, accommodation and living costs during their stay in Tenerife and during the activities related to the market.
  • Comply with the rules for the protection of copyright and related rights in relation to each and every one of the products, literary and artistic works, artistic performances and/or phonograms included in the proposals submitted. In the event that the applicant selected is not the holder of the copyright and/or related rights to the works, shows, performances or phonograms contained in the proposal submitted to this call, the respective licences authorising its use must be obtained from the rights holder.
  • Provide documents demonstrating that all members of the group or company and their artistic team, if selected, are compliant with the labour and administrative laws of their respective countries at the time when the show is to be performed, presenting any documents relating to their activity requested by mapas within the deadline and in the format stipulated by the organisers.
  • Authorise the organisers of the event to promote the selected proposals so that potential purchasers can explore them before the event begins.
  • Authorise the organisers of the event to make use of the material provided for promotional purposes without requesting any form of compensation.
  • List two (2) people on the application form who will be accredited for the networking event and who will be authorised to attend each of the meetings.
  • Accept that only the two (2) people registered will have access to the networking event.
  • Accept the terms and conditions for the open call, as well as any clarification or modification subsequently issued.

o Comply with the conditions indicated in this document throughout the duration of the call.

 

  • If at any point the applicant breaches any of these conditions, they may be excluded from the call.
  • Accept the result of the call and participate actively.
  • Attend and participate in mapas – the performing arts market of the South Atlantic which will be held from 9th to 11th July 2020.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ORGANISERS

  • Supply the selected proposals with user names and logins so that they can access the platform for scheduling appointments at the networking event.
  • Supply venues with the appropriate technical equipment for the selected artistic performances.
  • Produce a working plan and coordinate the companies to ensure the smooth running of the artistic performances.
  • Invite programmers, producers and other professionals interested in the cultural products on offer in the performing arts genres covered by this call.
  • Hold the market from 9th to 11th July 2020 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands – Spain.
